In case you’re unaware, Elden Ring multiplayer is easy to get stuck into. You can play through dungeons with your friends and take on tough bosses. Likewise, you can use multiplayer to invade other people through PvP whether out in the world or through the established arenas in the Colosseums. Multiplayer is alive and well in Elden Ring, let’s look into it.

How to play multiplayer in Elden Ring

In Elden Ring, you can play cooperatively or comparatively in PvE and PvP respectively. With the release of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, we expect all of this to remain the same. To engage in multiplayer, you need a few items first. As soon as you start the game and find the first Site of Grace, you’ll discover a corpse that has the Tarnished’s Furled Finger, which lets you place your summon sign down.

When looking to play multiplayer, golden summon signs indicate someone is looking to play cooperatively, while red summon signs are for PvP.

Playing co-op

To play in co-op, you need the Tarnished’s Furled Finger to lay down your summon sign. Typically, people will put this down outside of a boss room to let other people summon them when they need help with a boss. You can summon three friends to your world at any given time. To summon them, simply interact with the summon sign and see if it connects. When you have a cooperator in your world, you are now open to being invaded by other people. You can set a password and give that to your friends so they can join you more easily. There are, however, a lot of restrictions on multiplayer and what you can do:

  • Both you and your friends cannot use your mount.
  • If anyone dies, they have to be summoned back.
  • If you beat a boss out in the world, all of your cooperators will be sent back to their own world.
  • You cannot enter dungeons while you have someone summoned. You must enter the dungeon and then re-summon them.

PvP and Invasions

When you reach a certain place in the game, you get the Duelist’s Furled Finger which lets you place down a red summoning sign. This will let people see your summon sign and challenge you to a fight when you are summoned. Instead of using this way to fight people in PvP, you can set yourself open to invading other people by using the Blood Finger or the Festering Blood Finger.

Outside of invading and placing a red summon sign, you can fight people in the colosseums thanks to a recent update that opened them up specifically for PvP fights. For more on the Colosseums, we have a full guide explaining each type and how to get started.
