Great Katana

  • The Great Katana is a weapon and weapon type in Shadow of the Erdtree
  • The first one can be found in a lake west of the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace
  • Great Katanas give Dexterity players the option of a slower, higher-damage weapon

If you never liked using katanas in Elden Ring because they were just a bit too small, then you’re in luck! With the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, a whole host of new weapons and weapon types have been added, including the Great Katana, which true to its name is a big ol’ katana.

If you want to try it out for yourself and live out your big samurai dreams, we’ve put together a guide on how to find the earliest Great Katana in the Land of Shadow, as well as its requirements and how it scales.

Where to get the Great Katana

The Great Katana is one of the DLC’s early game weapons and can be found in the lake just west of the Greatbridge, North Site of Grace. This is at the far northern end of the road leading from the DLC’s starting point, near the Scorched Ruins Site of Grace. Make sure to pick up the map fragment for the Gravesite Plain to make things easier.

In the middle of the lake is the Slumbering Ghostflame Dragon, with the Great Katana right in front of it. You can grab the weapon without waking up the dragon, but just be careful if you don’t want to risk getting yourself into a fight.

Great Katana overview

The Great Katana is a weapon and a weapon type, meaning there are other types of Great Katana out there to find. It’s exactly what it says on the tin – a katana the size of a greatsword. That means its swings are slower than that of a regular katana, but they deal heavier damage, making it a great option for Dexterity builds that want a heftier weapon.

The Great Katana’s Ash of War is called ‘Overhead Stance’. The player lifts the katana in the air and then can perform either a light attack to step forwards and swing downwards, or a heavy attack to perform a series of slashes. This weapon can be infused with other Ashes of War.
