  • Midra uses attacks that build Frenzy, so bring Clarifying Boluses.
  • Midra can be parried and is weak to Bleed.
  • Stay close to avoid Frenzied Flame attacks.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame is another main boss to beat in Shadow of the Erdtree. Midra is found in a relatively small dungeon tucked away called Midra’s Manse. What starts out as a very easy fight turns out to be a classic FromSoft fake-out, so get ready for some nonsense. Here’s our Midra, Lord of Frenzies Flame boss guide detailing how we beat them.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame location

You fight Midra as the last boss inside the Midra’s Manse dungeon. This is a very short dungeon compared to the others and it is extremely out of the way of anywhere else in the DLC. To get there, you need to pass through the Abyssal Woods – a puzzle in itself – and you’ll find the Manse to the south. The Second Floor Chamber is the closest Site of Grace, directly outside the boss room. Praise be, this is the end of long runbacks… they might still be salty, though.

Recommended gear and our build

As always, we wielded our trusty Rivers of Blood katana in this fight and it was more than enough. We have a habit of forgetting to change our Talismans, and this has happened twice now where we accidentally wore the Golden Scarab instead of something actually useful. We didn’t do this on purpose to annoy you Midra, or you, Putrescent Knight.

  • Level: 191
  • Rivers of Blood +10, Messmer Soldier Shield,
  • Winged Serpent Helm, Rellana’s Armor, Rellana’s Gloves, Oathseeker Knight’s Greaves.
  • Golden Scarab (oops, again), Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2, Erdtree’s Favor +2, Rotten Winged Sword Insignia.
  • Mimic Tear +10.

Don’t be like us. You should take Talismans that will help increase your DPS or your survivability, whichever you need more of. Even so, we’ve now proven you can play terribly and beyond sub-optimally, and still come away with the W. Let’s get into the fight and how you can beat beat this chump.

Midra boss guide

Even in the first phase, Midra can still totally mess you up. They may look hilariously pitiful and weak but don’t underestimate the damage this little gremlin can do in one combo. When it comes to getting through this phase, you just need to stay on them and keep hitting them. Midra will stagger easily for now and the only time you should back up is when they use an AoE roar. Don’t give Midra time to do anything else and try to get through this part without using any healing.

If you stay close and keep interrupting them, you’ll have this phase done in no time. When you do, a cutscene will trigger. You thought it was over? Guess again. Midra will go on about something or other, but you don’t need to worry about that. Now, let phase two – the real fight – begin.

âś“ Why, Midra?

Midra will have a multi-hit combo here where they just whack you with their feeble arms. We say feeble, but man, does it hurt our HP a ton.

Right out of the gate, Midra started spewing Frenzied Flame out of their face hole. This fires wildly in front of the boss, stopping you from getting close. We were just out of range, and if you can get just beyond the reach you should use this time to summon your Spirit Ash. The attack goes on for a while and it will increase its reach, but you should be able to dodge by then.

Midra attacks very slowly with their two-handed sword. This makes the attacks very easy to parry if you’re feeling fancy. Likewise, you’ll be pleased to know Bleed also works on this boss and can trigger fairly regularly. The main thing you need to worry about in this fight is the Frenzy. Mostly, Midra will blast this out in front of them, hitting you in the process if you’re not careful. Frenzy is a pain to deal with, so bring plenty of Clarifying Boluses to remove any excess if you feel its necessary.

âś“ No boluses? No problem

You get a few through the Abyssal Woods and this dungeon, but you can also craft them. You need Dewkissed Herba, Crystal Cave Moss, and Eye of Yelough.

One attack from Midra is extremely hard to deal with, and this is a huge AoE explosion that seemingly covers the entire arena, and can take off more than half your HP. Midra will float into the sky and gather huge, Spirit Ball levels of power before dropping it directly onto your position. Fire will also rain down after, but you can get away from the main explosion if it lands on your Spirit Ash.

After this attack lands, Midra will power up and the arena will be aflame. Now, Midra’s attacks will have fire along with them, making it much harder to dodge or block them. Each swing also shoots out more fire along the floor, meaning you will always get hit if you roll backwards. With this in mind, always roll forward or to the side to avoid being caught in lingering hitboxes.

âś“ dodge this

We dodged the initial explosion, but it seems there is a lingering hitbox. Try rolling through the explosion, it could be we were caught because we rolled backwards.

Due to how slow Midra swings, you can get in a lot of free damage when a combo ends. Whether this is by you tanking the attack for your Spirit Ash or the other way around, when they stop swinging their flame sword around, go in aggressive for some damage while they reset their animation. If you’re lucky, you can trigger Bleed during this for a stagger, or you can break their stance for a critical.

You want to stay close during this fight, but you need to be ready to adapt if the boss uses fire magic in close range. Midra has a spell where she shoots several beams of frenzied flame at you and this will break your guard in a hurry, while also causing Frenzy to build up. If you see this beam attack, roll to the side as much as you can to avoid it.

âś“ Move closer

Staying too far away from Midra will cause him to use more Frenzied Flame magic, which is a nightmare to handle.

In this powered-up phase where Midra is throwing out fire with each swing, you have to be careful of a particular attack that will spread fire slightly behind him when he moves. Midra will swing forward and reposition, leaving a trail of fire. This fire can and will hurt you if you try to follow, so pay attention to the floor and don’t rush in blindly.

We never had to use any boluses to clear Frenzy and it really didn’t give us a hard time. It is probably in large thanks to the Mimic Tear. For whatever reason we found Midra to be, well, pretty mid. With this fight, you really want to exploit his slow movements to get in the most damage. Try and stay close to mid-range or get into their face to avoid any of the frenzied flame spells he throws out.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame move list

These are all of the attacks we saw Midra use on us. They might have a grab attack based on a small animation we saw of them trying to claw us, but we never saw it in action. If Midra does have a grab attack, rest assured it won’t be fun for you.

AttackDescriptionStrategy
Melee PunchesWhile in the first phase, Midra will swing at you for a melee combo. The attack hits three times and very hard. You can stagger him easily in this phase. Keep attacking and don’t let him get in a combo.
AoE ScreamBefore swinging, Midra can scream. This move will create an AoE shockwave and knock you back. Move back when you see this. After the scream is done, go in for more hits.
Frontal FireMidra will blast several rows of fire in front of them. This will happen three times, with the range increasing each time.Sometimes, these flames can just dance over your head. The hitbox on them is very specific, which can work in your favour. Move to the side or roll forward. You can block these easily, as well.
Stabbing LungeUsing their sword, Midra will lunge forward with a single stab.Exploit this attack if you see it. Midra will stand still for a while and you can get off a charged attack if you’re fast enough.
Turning SliceIf you are behind Midra, they can turn around and swing widely to catch you. This has a range all around Midra, so it’s better to back off or use this opportunity to heal. Try not to stay behind them too much. You will mostly see this attack done to your Spirit Ash when they take aggro.
Three-hit Melee With FireMidra will stab, swing, and then lunge forward. This last hit spreads fire at their feet, stopping you from following. If you are caught in this, you need to roll to the side to get away. You want to avoid the final hit that spreads fire and not roll into or away from the attack. Going to the side while not locking on will help you dodge this.
Twisting SliceThe boss will twist into the air and quickly land with a horizontal slice.Roll into the attack if it’s aimed at you. If Midra goes after your Spirit Ash, get behind them and start attacking.
Massive AoE ExplosionMidra will rise into the air and drop a huge ball of flame on the arena. Fire will spew out after. When this attack targets you, try and roll forward when you see Midra nearly touch the ground. If you are close enough, rolling forward will help you avoid the lingering hitbox it has going outwards.
Laser BeamMidra will blast three times with a frontal beam of Frenzies Flame. This strikes you several times and causes Frenzy to build. When you see Midra lunge with their head like this, roll to the side. Don’t try and block unless you have a sturdy shield, it will break your guard quickly.

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame rewards

Once you beat Midra, you will receive the Remembrance of the Lord of Frenzied Flame. This can be used at the Finger Reader in the Roundtable Hold to create the Midra’s Flame of Frenzy Incantation or the Greatsword of Damnation. Congratulations, not many bosses left for you to beat now.
