Moore is lovely, isn’t he? A laconic lad sat among his wares encased in armour. But don’t let his sad boy demeanour put you off, he has a whole quest line and even functions as a vendor for a good chunk of the expansion. And, his quest is arguably one of the more heart-wrenching threads you can unravel in Shadow of the Erdtree.

As with all From Software quests, Moore’s story and associated triggers are as opaque as they are obtuse, so we’ll walk you through how to complete Moore’s quest, including the consequences of a major decision about Moore’s ultimate fate. Spoilers ahead, so be wary.

Moore location

To start Moore’s quest, you’ll find him at the Main Gate Cross site of Grace just before the Belurat, Tower Settlement entrance in the north east of the Gravesite Plain. He’s sitting on the ground surrounded by cases and sacs just off from the site of grace and Ansbach.

Chat with him and he’ll spew cryptic words about ‘working together; for Miquella the Kind and gathering ‘many things’, then offer up a selection of goods and items for you to buy – Rune Arcs, Pickled Livers, Black Pirefly, mushrooms, arrows, and the Sealed Spiritsprings note.

There’s not much beyond that initial dialogue, but if you buy something from him, you’ll get the option to talk more. He’ll reveal that he enjoys finding things for people, including the Forager Brood and Leda. Reload the area, talk to Ansbach, select ‘Ask about the person in verdirgris armor’, and he’ll ask you to be on your best behaviour when encountering the Forager Brood. You’ll come across several of them (they are the friendly shrimp like creatures) in the Realm of Shadow, each one giving you a different crafting cookbook.

Moore will stay put there for the time being. If you take on Thollier’s quest, you can also ferry Black Syrup between the two, but Moore is just as sparring with his words.

A great rune has broken

Moore’s quest won’t progress until you see the ‘Somewhere, a great rune has broken…’ message pop-up on-screen accompanied by a loud cracking sound. This happens as you approach the Shadow Keep doors in Scadu Altus, accessible once you’ve beaten Rellana in Castle Ensis. Put simply, Miquella’s charm is broken, breaking several NPCs free from Miquella’s charm and opening up the Fissure optional dungeon in the Cerulean Coast.

Once the rune breaks, return to the Main Gate Cross site of grace and talk to Moore. He’ll lament that Kind Miquella’s light has gone. Select ‘Talk to Moore’ and he’ll confess that he’s lost and unsure of his next steps. He’ll say ‘I don’t know what to do. Our mother abandoned her brood. She did not love us. We are her children, what should we do? Must we be sad forever?’ You’ll be given three options:

  • Put it behind you – Moore leaves the Main Gate Cross site of grace and disappears until you fight Leda and allies in Enir-Ilim. He’ll side with Leda during the fight. The outcome of this banks on not killing Leda up until Enir-Ilim. Win the fight and you’ll get Moore’s Bell Bearing, the Verdigris Greatshield, Verdigris Helm, Verdigris Armor, Verdigris Gauntlets, and Verdigris Greaves.
  • Remain sad forever – Moore also departs from the Main Gate Cross site of grace. His body will turn up on the ridge just up from the Church of the Crusade in Scadu Altus, leaving behind Moore’s Bell Bearing and all his armor. He won’t show up for the fight in Enir-Ilim.
  • I don’t know – Moore disappears from the Maint Gate Cross site of grace. From what we can tell, he doesn’t show up at Enir-Ilim nor can you find his body near the Church of the Crusade.

As for the best choice, it really depends on how your moral compass sways. But, in terms of efficiency and easing the late game fight against Leda and co, the ‘Remain sad forever’ appears to be the best option. Moore does die, but at least not by your sword.
