These jokers at FromSoftware almost can’t be bothered to come up with new names for their bosses, and it was difficult to not read this as Rennala. While not totally unrelated to the base-game boss, Rellana, Twin Moon Knight, is fought at the end of the Ensis Castle Legacy Dungeon in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. This boss has some sweet style, too bad she’s got to go.

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight location

Rellana is the final boss of the Castle Ensis Legacy Dungeon. You must beat this boss to progress through to the next large area of the DLC, meaning she can be a fairly nasty gatekeeper. The site of Grace is outside the boss room, along with a summon sign for Leda and Dryleaf Dane.

Recommended gear and our build

As you will come to see if you read our boss guides, our build and gear don’t change much throughout the DLC. We use Rivers of Blood +10 and a shield with the Golden Parry Ash of War on it. In terms of Talismans and armour, we change up our fashion regularly since the damage negation doesn’t make a huge difference. Here’s what we used to beat Rellana.

  • Rivers of Blood +10, Inverted Hawk Heater Shield.
  • Diallos’s Mask, Oathkeeper Knight’s Armor, Confessor Gloves, Blaidd’s Greaves.
  • Crimson Seed Talisman, Dragoncrest Shield Talisman +2, Erdtree’s Favor +2, Assassin’s Crimson Dagger.
  • Mimic Tear +10.
  • Radahn’s Great Rune, but we didn’t have it activated.

Rellana can be parried, which made the Golden Parry ability extremely useful for hitting those awkward (and often dumb) timings in Elden Ring. The bleed status continues to be extremely powerful and it can be used well against all bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree. As always, using the Mimic Tear will make a huge difference and we recommend this over summoning NPCs.

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight boss guide

As soon as the fight begins, Rellana will either close the distance and be on you immediately, or she will stand back and fire endless streams of magical swords at you. Once again, you want to stay close to this boss most of the time. The AI will use and abuse its infinite FP to keep casting powerful spells at you, but if you get closer, the boss will choose to use their swords.

✓ To summon or not to summon

We do not recommend using Dryleaf Dane or Needle Knight Leda for this fight, as the two of them will inflate the boss’s HP by an obscene amount. You’re much better off using one or none of them, and calling in your favourite Spirit Ash to help.

Compared to the Dancing Lion, Rellana is a much more straightforward boss battle. She use two swords and a mixture of magic and melee attacks. Rellana can be parried and has plenty of moves that are extremely well-telegraphed, but you need to hit two or three parries in a row to get a critical. Rellana hits ridiculously hard, and a few hits of the standard melee combo will melt your HP away in a flash.

If you want to be all fancy and parry the boss to exert your dominance, you can bait and abuse plenty of Rellana’s attacks. The best one to exploit, by far, is the attack she uses during a jump to the side to reposition. Rellana will leap and then perform a backhanded sweeping attack, wait for her to land and then parry when the attack comes. Something about the timing and hitbox of this attack makes it reliable to parry.

✓ Parry this

Another attack is one of her standard combos. She will swing three times, cutting upwards with the first two, and finishing the combo with an overhead slash with both swords. You can use this combo to perform a setup parry, where you block the first two hits and then parry the final one. The first two parries won’t knock her down, but you can get in roughly three quick hits before she recovers.

The basic principle of this fight is to stay aggressive and let your Spirit Ash tank when you need to heal. Her combos hit hard, but you can block them if your shield is good enough. Equally, rolling forward into her attacks will help you dodge. Try not to dodge backwards, simply because her range, wide sweeps, and tracking will pretty much always roll-catch you, hitting you no matter what. Dodge to the side or into her attacks to more comfortably avoid the attacks.

Rellana phase two – enchanted swords

After you get her to roughly half HP, she will begin to power up her swords. She enchants both of them, one with magic and one with fire. She will stand still for a long time while doing this and not hit you, which makes this the perfect time to get in tons of free damage. If you can do enough damage during this window, you can stagger her for a free critical. With enchanted swords, this buffs her damage considerably and makes it harder to survive her combos if you get caught in them.

When she enchants her swords, stay close and keep attacking. If you can do enough damage during this window, you could get a stagger and score a free critical hit. Thanks to how much damage she does during this phase, it’s much better to avoid using the NPC summons since she will almost certainly die during this phase and leave you all alone to deal with her increased damage and astronomical HP pool.

Some attacks to look out for during her enchanted weapon phase are one of her melee combos with a long wind-up and her fast-slash combo. These two attacks can catch you out, and for whatever reason, deal ridiculous damage. The quick slashes can be pulled out from close melee range, usually before she jumps to the side. It’s better to block these two and wait for the side jump.

✓ Wiz Bizz

After the swords are glowing the boss might perform a multi hit combo where she sends out magical blade beams. Try and move away from the boss and roll to the side to dodge them all. This isn’t an issue if you’re far away enough, but it can be dicey if she uses it in close range.

Her lunging combo will be used at mid-range to close the distance. It ends in an attack she holds for a ridiculously long time to catch you out. She will have both swords under her arms before slicing in front of her. Don’t get caught out, take this time to hit her two or three times and then roll. You can get behind her with the roll and continue attacking for more damage.

Full Moon AoE attack

Rellana has one of the most annoying attacks in the DLC. She will back all the way up and then float into the air, conjuring a magical full moon in the process. She will drop the moon on the ground, causing an arena-wide AoE, and then she will do it a second time, and then finish the combo with another slam into the ground, also with a huge AoE. The only way to dodge these attacks is to jump three times in a row.

✓ that’s no moon

Jump when you see the first moon dropping. Then jump immediately after to dodge the second, and jump again to dodge the third. Each time you land, there is enough time to jump again.

In case you were wondering, the NPCs and Mimic Tear do not understand how to dodge this, which is beyond stupid. It’s unclear what makes her use this attack and she might choose not to. With that move out of the way, there are a couple of nasty attacks she is more likely to pull out, specifically a twirling flame attack that spawns fire at your feet. For this attack, keep your distance and look at the floor to see where the fire is coming from. As soon she stops spinning to win, get close and punish.

Super-charged Carian Greatsword spell

She can also choose to use a super-charged version of the Carian Greatsword sorcery that is extremely hard to dodge. She first does an overhead slam and then a gigantic wide slash. The wide slash has an obscenely large range on it, and it will hit you even if you’re behind her. The best way to avoid this is to hope your summons take the heat while you run away or dodge through it, but the timing is designed to trick you out. Block it if you can – or take the hit – and heal immediately.

If you stay close, you can shut down her ranged glintstone blades that home in on you. Stick to her like glue and favour her right side to get in the most damage after dodging her attacks. The Mimic Tear, especially with Rivers of Blood, can keep her busy and trigger bleed throughout the fight. Likewise, a Mimic Tear with a large weapon will be able to stagger her easily, so you have a lot of ways to take her on.

✓ Tip

If you manage to parry her and get a critical, you should use a charged attack while she is getting up. This will let you get a ton of free damage in while she recovers.

If you’re struggling to find a window to heal yourself, you’re not alone. She is ridiculously aggressive and if you run from her she will use endless streams of magic to hunt you down. To this end, the Mimic Tear or Leda can help take the heat. Otherwise, your best times to heal are when she finishes a combo, or while she’s enchanting her swords. As always, pick your time and see if it works.

That covers all the nonsense that Rellana can and will throw at you. We wish you luck in this fight and hope this information helps you get past her. As always, if you’re struggling against a boss in the DLC, you should explore around and pick up more Scadutree Fragments to greatly bolster your stats.

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight move list

Use this table to see all of Rellana’s moves she can use in the fight and our advice on how to combat them. These aren’t the official attack names, we’re just taking some creative liberties.

MoveDescriptionStrategy
Carian / Glintsword PhalanxRellana uses a mixture of Carian Phalanx blades that spawn above her and home in on you. There are a couple variants to this, but they all follow the same pattern of flying towards you.Run to the side or dodge forward to get past them. She won’t typically use them in close range.
Jumping Side SwipeRellana will leap to the side and perform a spinning backhand swipe when she lands. This attack repositions her, so keep an eye out for itThe hit she does when she lands the jump is very easy to parry. Otherwise, you can try rolling into her or block it.
Three-hit melee comboOne of her basic attacks sees her swing upwards with each sword, finishing the combo with an overhead slice. For this attack, you should roll to the side. Liekwise, you can block the first two hits and then go for a parry on the third one, since it is very easy to time. The range on the third hit is long and she will track you, so roll into her or the side if you’renot going for the parry.
Lunging ComboTo close the distance, Rellana will lunge at you
Quick Hit ComboRellana will perform two fast slashes, and then usually go straight into her jumping side attack. She can use her side jumping attack at the end of any of her combos it seems. Watch out for her chaining them together
Fire SpinRellana will spin to win and start twirling towards you while spreading fire everywhere. She will have fire around her in a large radius and fire will spawn on the ground.Stay well back when she does this attack. Keep an eye on the floor so you don’t step in the flames and then close in as soon as you see her stop. She will spin three times, but fire will spew for a while.
Magic Blade BeamIn her enchanted sword phase, she will slash and fire magical blade beams at you in a combo.Roll to the side or just run left or right to dodge it.
Gigantic Carian GreatswordRellana will summon a huge Glintstone blade and slam it overhead, she will then follow up with a wide slash that covers a huge AoE. It will hit you if you’re behind her, but you can run to the other side of the arena to dodge it. Jumping might work, but we were never successful due to how fast the arc comes out. You’re better off blocking it and healing up immediately. It can take off half your HP, so be very careful
Twin Full Moons AoERellana will float into the air and summon two full moons. She will drop them one by one, ending with a third and final slam attack. This AoE covers the entire room. While intimidating, this is extremely easy to dodge if you know it’s coming. All you need to do is jump three times in a row.
Double-Handed SlashRellana will strike you two times using both swords at once. This attack deals a ton of damage to you. You want to roll to her left, which will increase your chances of the swords going over your head.

Rellana, Twin Moon Knight rewards

When you beat Rellana, you get the Remembrance of the Twin Moon Knight. You can now buy Rellana’s gear from the Finger Crone in the Roundtable Hold.
