It’s always the quiet ones, isn’t it? Despite his humble ways and admitting he’s “as weak as a kitten and as thick as two planks,” Thiollier has one of the more compelling quest lines in the Shadow of the Erdtree. Unravel the thread and you’ll end up in an entirely optional area in the very far south of the Realm of Shadow.

This is a FromSoft game, so no quest log or map markers to go so we’ll walk you through how to complete Thiollier’s quest line. It’s vaguely intertwined with Moore’s quest as well, so it’s well worth completing that one as well as you go about beating bosses and exploring in the DLC.

Thiollier location – Pillar Path Cross

To start the quest, you’ll need to talk to Thiollier as the Pillar Path Cross site of grace. It’s located in the east of Gravesite Plain and can be accessed from the very start of the expansion. Head for Castle Ensis across the Ellac Greatbridge, then take a right east before the Castle Front site of grace. Take the left-hand path going upwards through a forest. Take a left at the crossroads and head towards the Miquella’s Cross to find Thiollier, the site of grace, and a Scadutree Blessing fragment.

Talk to Thiollier and he’ll reveal that he’s also a Tarnished but not much of a fighter, other than wheeling and dealing in all things poison. You won’t get much else out of him. But, you’ll gain access to his shop, which sells an assortment of poison-themed wares including the Deadly Poison Perfume Bottle weapon.

Thiollier’s Concoction

Load into the Main Gate Cross site of grace just south of Belurat in the northwest of Gravesite Plain. Once there, interact with Moore and choose the ‘Talk to Moore option’. If it’s your first time speaking to Moore, get through the initial dialogue and you’ll see the option pop up. He’ll give you the Black Syrup, an item he found for Thiollier.

Head back to the Pillar Path Cross site of grace, talk to Thiollier, and select ‘Give black syrup.’ Grateful to Moore for the item, he’ll mention finding a way to repay him for the service provided. Select ‘Ask about black syrup’ and he’ll promise a reward for your help in the matter, mentioning an elixir for when you’re ‘weary of the weight of this life.’ Choose ‘I’m weary of life’ and he’ll give you Thiollier’s Concoction.

A great rune has broken

For the moment, Thiollier’s quest will go quiet until you defeat Rellana in Castle Ensis, reach Scadu Altus, and get the ‘Somewhere, a great rune has broken…’ on-screen message as you approach Shadow Keep. For us, the message popped just beyond the bridge to the east of Bonny village. Listen for a large cracking sound and look out for the pop-up. The rune breaks the spell most of the NPCs are under, leaving many of them lost.

Once the rune has broken, head back to the Pillar Path Cross site of grace and talk to Thiollier. He’ll explain that he’s haunted by memories of St. Trina and velvety sleep. Reload the area and talk to him again to learn that he’s heading south to the shore to search for St. Trina. Reload the area and he’ll be gone

At this point, you can also head to the Highroad Cross site of grace just north of Castle Ensis in Scadu Altus and talk to Leda. She’ll provide a bit more colour to Thiollier’s story. When she mentions killing off members of the group unfit to bask in Miquella’s glory, choose Thiollier. She will back him, convinced he’s incapable of betrayal due to his loyalty to St. Trina, Miquella’s other half. From there, you can select Hornsent, Ansbach, or neither as you see fit.

Into the Fissure

Head to the Cerulean Coast Cross site of grace and head south on to the peninsula. There you’ll find a huge hole that you can climb down into to reach the Stone Coffin Fissure, a sprawling optional underground area. Grab the Fissure site of grace on your way down.

Press on through the Fissure until you unlock the Fissure Depths site of grace. Drop down into the hole at the top of the stairs to reach the Garden of Deep Purple and the Putrescent Knight boss. Defeat the Knight, grab the Garden of Deep Purple site of grace, then follow the path forward into a cave to find Thiollier on the ground near St. Trina. Talk to Thiollier to learn that he’s falling into a deep slumber. He’ll ward you off taking St. Trina’s poison.

Ignore him. Interact with St. Trina and choose ‘Imbibe the nectar.’ Do this four times. Each time you’ll respawn back at the Garden of Deep Purple site of grace nearby. After the fourth time, St. Trina will finally speak, begging that you stop Miquella. Talk to Thiollier and pass on St. Trina’s words. Do so again. He won’t be happy about it.

Load into the Garden of Deep Purple site of grace and Thiollier will invade you. Defeat him (you’ll get the St. Trina’s Smile talisman), return to the cave, and talk to Thiollier. Talk to St. Trina and consume the poison two more times. St. Trina will urge you to kill Miquella to save him from ‘caged divinity’. Talk to Thiollier again and pass on St. Trina’s words again. That’s all you’ll get out of Thiollier and St. Trina.

Enir-Ilim

Pushing the quest this far before reaching the top of Enir-Ilim will give you the option to summon Thiollier alongside potentially Ansbach, Hornsent, and Sanguine Noble Nataan to help you fight Leda and her allies. Furthermore, you can also summon him for the expansion’s final boss fight. Summoning Thiollier and defeating the final boss will allow you to get Thiollier’s Hidden Needle, Thiollier’s Mask, Thiollier’s Garb, Thiollier’s Gloves, and Thiollier’s Trousers.

After the fight, return to St. Trina in the cave near the Garden of Deep Purple site of grace. Thollier is no longer there and St. Trina is asleep, but there’s St. Trina’s Blossom for you to pick up at St. Trina’s feet. It acts as a helmet, granting a slight boost to FP.
