One of the key aspects in upgrading your character in Elden Ring, or any FromSoftware game for that matter, is simply levelling up. Every level lets you put an extra point into any of your stats, boosting your health, damage, endurance and more. But the later into the game you get, things get a bit less simple.

If you wanted to just pump all of your stats into Strength in the hopes of becoming an unstoppable one-hitting machine, you’ll quickly find that your extra levels aren’t changing very much. We’re here to explain soft caps, what they are and what the soft caps are for each stat in Elden Ring.

What are soft caps in Elden Ring?

You can level every stat up to a maximum of 99 in Elden Ring, the ‘hard cap’, but once each stat reaches a certain threshold, every additional level over that will give you fewer benefits. This level is known as a ‘soft cap’. 

For example, levelling up Vigor from level 39 to level 40 will increase your HP by 48 points. If you level it up again to 41, however, you’ll only increase it by 26 points. That’s because the Vigor stat has a soft cap at level 40.

Every stat in Elden Ring has at least two soft caps, and some even have three. Knowing where your soft caps are is important to min/max your build as investing 10 levels past the soft cap in one skill might give you far less damage than investing them in a lower skill that hasn’t yet reached the soft cap.
