Shooter fans hold Call of Duty’s excellent multiplayer in high regard, with an assortment of game modes to play in and weapon skins to earn. Their campaigns are usually great as well but considering Modern Warfare 3’s mixed reception, you might want to try out other first-person shooters. We’ve compiled a list of seven FPS titles ranging from campaign-focused sprints to multiplayer games with plenty of action and close wins.

After branching out from Activision, Respawn Entertainment found great success in Titanfall, a game that paired fast-moving Pilots with hulking Titan companions for asymmetric multiplayer matches. The sequel took things to another level, featuring one of the best campaigns in FPS history alongside some incredible multiplayer mayhem. Players of sci-fi Call of Duty games like Black Ops 3 and Advanced Warfare will feel right at home here. Titanfall 2 retains the slick movement of CoD titles, meaning that the learning curve isn’t very steep. It’s easily one of the best games in the genre and is well worth your time.

Battlefield 2042

  • Release Date: November 12, 2021
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Casual, First-Person Shooter, Shooter

Despite a tough launch, EA has done a good job in keeping Battlefield 2042 fresh with constant updates with new modes and weapons. It’s not Battlefield as you remember it but there’s a lot to like, from its cutting-edge visuals and deep customization to its focus on equipment. I loved its Portal feature that lets you play reimagined maps from older titles like Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3. For a more high-stakes experience, Hazard Zone’s single-life combat, resource captures, and extractions are great too.

XDefiant

  • Release Date: May 21 2024
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): First-Person Shooter, Multiplayer, Shooter

Ubisoft’s new free-to-play shooter pairs Call of Duty-like shootouts with a focus on abilities thanks to its factions system. With familiar characters from Ubisoft’s games like Division 2’s Cleaners and Splinter Cell’s Echelon, old-timers will be able to step into some of gaming’s most beloved icons. It’s got some neat weapon customization as well, from earning achievements to getting new weapon camos. Modes like Hot Shot put a fresh spin on traditional multiplayer modes like Call of Duty’s Kill Confirmed. XDefiant’s maps have been fashioned from Ubisoft’s previous environments as well, like the old Echelon headquarters.

BattleBit Remastered

  • Release Date: June 15, 2023
  • Platform(s): PC
  • Genre(s): First-Person Shooter, Shooter

BattleBit Remastered exploded in popularity when it launched in 2023. As an affordable alternative to Call of Duty and Battlefield 2024, this blocky FPS title might not stun you with gorgeous visuals. But it keeps players coming back for more with a finely balanced combat system and smooth performance. Headshots from your rifles are pretty satisfying and the class system rewards all roles and playstyles. The game lets you use vehicles as well. Audio issues currently plague the game but it’s still worth checking out.

PUBG: Battlegrounds

  • Release Date: December 20, 2017
    • – 19 March 2018 (iOS, Gameboy Advance)
    • – 20 December 2017 (PC)
    • – 12 December 2017 (Xbox One)
    • – 07 December 2018 (PlayStation 4)
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Genre(s): Action, Massively Multiplayer, Shooter

When it comes to battle royale titles, few do it as well as the original Player Unknown: Battlegrounds. Now known as PUBG Battlegrounds, the game tasks you with surviving in massive maps packed with stray weapons, vehicles, and players. Working towards being the last player standing won’t be easy, especially since you aren’t treated to revives or automatic healing. You’ll need to scavenge for healing items and weapons right from when you land, keeping things tense throughout battle royale matches. It’s a solid alternative to Warzone if you want a distilled experience free from perks and other flourishes.

Counter Strike 2

  • Release Date: September 27, 2023
  • Platform(s): Linux, PC
  • Genre(s): First-Person Shooter, Shooter

Players returning from Counter Strike: Global Offensive (known as CS: GO) will find plenty to love in its sequel. With millions of players, you can expect tense 5v5 encounters in Counter-Strike 2 where health regeneration is off the table and it’s all about skill. No more killstreaks or laser weapons, it’s all about skilled Desert Eagle and AWP players. The game does have casual modes like Gun Game and Team Deathmatch as well. It’s a fresh break from CoD’s focus on movement.

Halo Infinite

  • Release Date: December 8, 2021
    • – 08 December 2021 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X)
  • Platform(s): PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Shooter

Halo Infinite’s multiplayer is free-to-play and while you need to pay up to access the campaign, it’s worth the investment. Honouring a decades-old legacy while keeping things accessible for newcomers is by no means simple. However, 343 Industries succeeds in maintaining an active community thanks to constant updates with new maps and weapons, much like Call of Duty. While the weapons can take a while to master, the lack of an obtuse attachment system makes positioning and skill even more vital. While Master Chief’s latest adventure feels familiar, there’s plenty in its open world to warrant a look at its Halo ring.
