Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the Fallout: New Vegas developers got to cook a new first-person action-adventure title: The Outer Worlds. There’s a lot of classic Bethesda energy here, from the sci-fi world brimming with humour to the interesting characters you’ll come across. The game’s perk system that reacts to your performance in-game is particularly innovative. It kicks off as you wake up in a colonist ship, letting you meet factions with their agendas as you unravel a galactic conspiracy. With a sequel on the way as well, it’s a great option for fans of Fallout 4.

Metro Exodus

  • Release Date: February 13, 2019
    • – 15 February 2019 (Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4)
    • – 31 December 2020 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X)
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X

Metro Exodus takes place a year after Metro: Last Light. While the older Metro 2033 from 2010 fits the gritty vibe of Fallout better, the latest Metro title overhauls the franchise’s exploration mechanics, giving you more freedom than Metro 2033’s claustrophobia-inducing corridors. You play as Artyom and undertake a long journey to meet some old allies, one that throws plenty of threats at you. There are an assortment of items to scavenge and craft to knock down massive radiation-afflicted enemies. The crafting is particularly top-notch, letting you upgrade gear and equipment to survive in a nuclear winter.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

  • Release Date: February 4, 2022
    • – 04 February 2022 (PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S)
  • Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, RPG, Survival

While Dying Light 2 isn’t directly an RPG, it does have some role-playing elements. The major threat this time is a zombie infestation, one that gnaws away at the remains of humanity’s refugees. The parkour system makes controlling your character a blast and makes vertical spaces a joy to explore. And while the game has its share of guns, melee is a strong focus in Dying Light 2. Once you get to grips with flowing between melee swipes and barreling past ledges and platforms, you’ll thin zombie herds quickly as you forage around its post-apocalyptic world.

BioShock Infinite

  • Release Date: March 26, 2013
    • – 26 March 2013 (PlayStation 3, PC, Xbox 360)
  • Platform(s): Linux, Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One
  • Genre(s): Action, Shooter

If you’re looking for a dystopian blast to the past, BioShock Infinite nails the capitalist floating city aesthetic with its spin on well-trodden tropes. While the combat won’t blow you away, its weapon variety and spell systems are pretty competent. The main plot is a treat, taking you to the skies of Columbia to rescue a mysterious girl. Traversal is exhilarating thanks to sky-lines that can be latched onto mid-combat. As Booker DeWitt, you get to reshape time with powerful abilities that let you bring in weapons and turrets via portals. While its open spaces don’t offer the same freedom as Fallout 4, its excellent themes and narrative are reasons enough to warrant a playthrough. It’s got some solid expansions as well.

Fallout 76

  • Release Date: November 14, 2018
    • – 31 December 2018 (PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One)
  • Platform(s): PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, RPG

Would you recommend this game?

Of course, Fallout 76 was going to be on this list. While its mixed reception at launch might discourage you, updates and expansions have improved its take on the wasteland. Players looking for a social experience will have a great time sharing resources and working on quests together. You can still play solo via a private server if you prefer to take on West Virginia as a lone wolf. A starter kit option lets you skip some of the early-game grind, helping you get into the meat of the game faster. With a variety of dystopian environments to explore, Fallout 76 is worth checking out, especially with friends.

Cyberpunk 2077

  • Release Date: December 10, 2020
    • – 10 December 2020 (PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Google Stadia)
  • Platform(s): Google Stadia, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series X
  • Genre(s): Action, Adventure, RPG

After a disastrous launch, Cyberpunk 2077 won players’ hearts with its 2.0 update and Phantom Liberty expansion. It’s a living, breathing world that trades complex NPC behaviours for gritty neon visuals that push the standards of visual fidelity in gaming. And just like Fallout 4, side quests lurk in every corner. The story is great, packing in stealth encounters, hacking, and stylish combat alongside a cast of well-written characters. Keanu Reeves’ performance as Johnny Silverhand is impeccable and drives home its themes of anti-capitalism and terminal illness. If your hardware can take it, Night City awaits.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

  • Release Date: August 22, 2016
    • – 23 August 2016 (Xbox One, PC)
  • Platform(s): Linux, macOS, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
  • Genre(s): Action, RPG

Would you recommend this game?

If you want a game that offers multiple paths to accomplish an objective, Deus Ex stands pretty tall in the pecking order. Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided are excellent options for players who want to do things their way. And yes, that includes holding a trashbin to confuse a robot’s image recognition system as you fire your pistol at it. While Mankind Divided’s story might not hold up against its previous titles, its branching storylines and open-ended levels are great playgrounds for both combat and stealth fans.
