It’s official: 2012 zombie action adventure Lollipop Chainsaw is getting a remake, and it’s coming next year.
The news comes from the game’s original producer Yoshimi Yasuda. After teasing the cult favourite was coming back ‘in some form’ last month, Yasuda tweeted a statement today detailing his plans for the series. His new publisher, Dragami Games, have bought the rights to the game and are working on the project.
“Ultimately,” he revealed. “Various factors resulted in things making it so that fans can no longer easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since players have been able to access the game on current consoles. We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us, and did not want to leave it limbo where players who want to play it cannot.”

As well as buying the rights, the studio has already contacted Warner Bros – who supported the previous game – about being on board. They’ve said yes, it seems, and so the project is on. However, there will be a few changes in the remake, as Yasuda detailed. Off the bat, expect the licensed soundtrack to change significantly. Yasuda claims that while a few tracks should hopefully survive the upgrade, most of the soundtrack will be all new music.
In addition, the team plan to make use of the higher-spec hardware of newer consoles. As a result, Yasuda says, “We will be taking a more realistic approach with the graphics this time”. Whether this means a move away from the comic-book stylings of the original, we’ll have to wait and see. There’s no formal title or platforms for the Lollipop Chainsaw remake just yet but Yasuda hopes the game will arrive in 2023.
