Following Activision’s massive Black Ops 6 reveal during the Xbox Showcase, the game’s developers have provided even more details about the upcoming CoD entry. Yale Miller and Matt Scronce, Treyarch’s director of production and associate director of design, respectively, discussed the BO6 campaign length and gameplay in a recent interview.

According to Miller (per Game File), Black Ops 6 is “netting out in the kind of length of a classic Call of Duty campaign.” Now, if its plot is anything like the original games, you can probably expect its campaign to clock in at around seven to eight hours. It’s also worth noting that since BO2 had multiple endings, completionists may be looking at an even longer completion time if Black Ops 6 follows in its predecessors’ footsteps.

In addition to the campaign length, Miller also teased the types of missions you can expect throughout. “I think a big goal for us all is just to give players the opportunity to be smart, where you’re not just taking them on this journey the whole time, where they have the opportunity to explore and decide how they want to get through a situation,” he said. Although neither Miller nor Scronce specifically mentioned Open Combat Missions, the gameplay they’re referring to is similar to the controversial OCMs Sledgehammer Games introduced in 2023’s Modern Warfare 3.

Although novel, Open Combat Missions were widely criticized upon release since they were often repetitive and largely similar to Warzone missions. Of course, the OCMs’ lack of depth may have been caused by a much shorter development cycle (according to Bloomberg, MW3 was developed in just 16 months). So, with Activision giving Treyarch much more time to develop Black Ops 6, it’s possible the devs have found a way to make them more intriguing and enjoyable.

For now, though, you’ll have to wait until the Black Ops 6 release date to find out what’s in store. Until then, you can learn more about the upcoming CoD game through our pages on the game’s round-based Zombies mode and groundbreaking Omnimovement feature.
