The first two Fallout games are a tough nut to crack. The gameplay of old CRPGs has always been difficult to immerse yourself into. Despite revolutionising the medium by ditching the dungeon, it’s hard to claim that the original Fallout and its sequel hold up in our modern age. As one of the biggest franchises in gaming, there’s been no shortage of players asking for modern reboots and remakes of the games that started the Wasteland, though Todd Howard has dispelled any such rumours.

In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, the Director of Bethesda Studios said – in short – that there will be no remakes of the original games. Despite the company not having developed the first two games, Bethesda now own the full rights to the IP following Interplay Production’s financial struggles over the past two decades. Matty asked Howard if there was any interest in making the first two games more ‘beginner-friendly’.

“The main priority for us is making them available, making sure you can still play them… and making sure they run okay…Beyond that, we’ve talked about it, but our priorities in terms of dev work haven’t been in those areas…We want it to load up and run well. I think the charm of games from that era and the original Fallout is a little bit of that age.”

He goes on to say that he wants people to “experience it the way it was,” and that feels like a final nail in the coffin to say that we will probably never see them remade. This will be disappointing for many to hear, especially considering the ever-growing trend of remakes and remasters that the bigger gaming corporations can’t get enough of. I mean, Naughty Dog has remastered how many of their games already?

It seems that Bethesda’s “priorities in dev” are playing a part in the fact that we will likely never see these games remade, though that discount external developers taking on the role. Nightdive are regularly remaking older titles, and if there’s a team up for the job – it’s them.

The first few games are rough to look at. While they’re packed full of Wasteland charm, it does feel like a little bit of a shame. I know for one, I will probably never attempt playing them again.
