Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is coming in the next few days, and ahead of its monumental release, the game has finally surpassed 25m global sales, overtaking Cyberpunk 2077, Monster Hunter World, and GTA IV.

As of yesterday, Elden Ring hit quarter of a million sales, with more likely to come as the DLC edges closer. Not too long ago, Bandai Namco shared a PSA stating that over 35% of Elden Ring players aren’t ready yet for the DLC, having not had the chance to defeat Mohg yet. That number has risen significantly since, though the number of players only continues to rise as the game is now firmly planted in fourth place in the Top Sellers list on Steam.

There’s a slew of new players sinking their hooks into Elden Ring, so much so that even two years after its launch, sales are increasing at a very consistent rate. According to Gamalytics, for example, Steam has sold 131,000 copies in the last seven days, which is only 3,000 less than the amount that GTA V has sold in that time too.

Elden Ring’s expansion is huge – we already know that. We’d estimate that there’s almost 30 hours of new gameplay to be experienced, and this only really covers the main plot. With all the bells and whistles that FromSoftware like to saturate its games with; lore, side-quests, optional bosses, and new builds to develop, test, and deploy in PVP, Shadow of the Erdtree is likely deserving of its own game altogether.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the only contemporary games that can hold a candle to Elden Ring. Other RPGs such as Skyrim, The Witcher 3, and non-RPGs such as GTA V were released long before Elden Ring, and thus their sales are much higher. If Cyberpunk 2077 is the true contemporary competitor in terms of marketplace positioning, then the fact that Elden Ring has just overtaken it in sales before the story is even complete is a huge achievement. The 2022 Game of the Year is positioning itself as a strong contender for one of the most impressive gaming projects of 2024, and things are looking very, very bright for FromSoftware, despite the Shadow of the Erdtree.
