Fortnite has had a massive year so far. Chapter 5 Season 3 has only just begun and it is set to get even bigger and better, especially this month judging by leaks. However, away from leaks, Epic has confirmed a bunch of additions set to debut later this year. Unfortunately, an exciting new feature for Fortnite has just been delayed from an imminent release.

As mentioned, there is plenty for fans to anticipate this month. A new leak has unearthed the next in-game event and mini pass, meanwhile, Epic has confirmed that a “widely-requested throwable object” is returning soon to replace Boogie Bombs. We are also soon set to see the return of an overpowered pistol and popular healing item.

All of the above are things to anticipate for the near future. Sadly, the confirmed addition of proximity chat was set to debut soon, but it has been delayed.

Epic has just delayed Fortnite proximity chat

Proximity chat is set to join Fortnite in 2024. However, it will be joining Creative only as opposed to the whole battle royale experience.

Epic Games confirmed the planned addition of proximity chat in their UEFN roadmap for this year posted on Trello. It was originally pegged for Q2 2024, meaning it would have needed to debut this month. However, on May 31st, Epic delayed it to Q4.

Seeing as it is now delayed to Q4 2024, fans should expect proximity chat to arrive in either October, November, or December. Below is a list of other features pegged for Q4 2024 on the UEFN roadmap:

  • First person camera
  • General physics
  • Custom game items
  • Text chat
  • Follow-A-Creator

For those not in the know, proximity chat is a form of voice chat seen in other multiplayer properties like Call of Duty. Basically, if you are within the proximity of another player, you are able to hear them speak.

Although exciting, proximity chat is also controversial because of toxicity that can be found and heard online in pretty much every multiplayer game. Fortnite is also a game for all ages, so it’ll be interesting to see how Epic implements proximity chat and what filters they add.

For more Fortnite, a recent leak shows the first Season 4 skin with a new gameplay feature. A new survey also shows potential future collaborations including Pokémon and Grand Theft Auto.
