After first being teased in the Viper Commandos Warbond, the brand new jungle planet Gacrux was unexpectedly added to Helldivers 2 without warning and it has been a huge hit so far. The large trees and swamps make for one of the nicest looking planets we’ve seen so far, as well as allowing for new strategies to ensure victory over the Terminids.
The community has been enjoying the new planet too, with it even leaving the current Major Order in doubt as players abandon planets causing the Terminids to gain the power hand again.
Players have taken to Reddit to discuss the new planet and share their thoughts on it, with U/Empress_Draconis_ calling it “one of the most beautiful planets I’ve been” but did note it has some issues saying “My eagles usually hit the trees which is 90% of the planet x3Also (on ps5 at least) it’s kinda laggy at times but honestly this is my favourite biome and it’s nice to have my camo be useful.”
With many of the locations in Helldivers being open wastelands, many are praising it as being a fresh type of location that requires strategy, including u/JolousTrousers92 who said “Love it! I’m tired of barren open plains. Having to actually plan your stratagems for environment is amazing.”
U/MatisowatyPL has a great idea for future biomes saying “Now replace the trees with destructible skyscrapers and we have a city planet.” This would be a great idea as citizens live on most of the planets but the sections we see often looks like wastelands. It would be great to see the inner cities and locations where civilians live and defend them from the Automatons and Terminids. U/HerbThePerb did note that this was the case in the first Helldivers game saying “First game had capital planets for each faction that were city biomes. Even fought on super earth a bunch of times cuz you could actually lose the war in the first game. Really hoping they do something catastrophic like that when The Illuminate come.”
It will be interesting to see what direction Arrowhead Game Studios goes with for future planets, but this is a great step in the right direction, especially as it made the Viper Commandos Warbond theme make more sense. Gacrux does require a slightly different strategy due to the large trees blocking some Stratagems and enemies being harder to detect.
