Several years after Hideo Kojima’s fallout with Konami, the video game community continues to lament the loss of a partnership that brought about the hit Metal Gear Solid franchise. Recently, however, it appears some burnt bridges are slowly getting mended after Noriaki Okamura, producer for Metal Gear Solid Delta, said he’d “like nothing better than to work with Mr. Kojima and the rest of the team again.”

“If that could happen, that would be the dream,” Okamura continued during Konami’s recent Production Hotline panel. Of course, this statement in no way confirms a Kojima-Konami reunion any time soon since it seems to be more of a personal hope for the upcoming remake’s producer. Plus, Okamura noted that “people have moved on to new things and new commitments,” referring to Kojima’s upcoming dystopian sequel, Death Stranding 2, making a near-term reconciliation even more unlikely.

Okamura later stated that although Kojima’s return would be ideal, “We can’t just take it for granted that everyone would work with us again or let ourselves be completely dependent on them.” “I just don’t think it’s right for us to be the ones to make that kind of demand of anyone. So, we’re working with the expectation that whatever we make, it’s up to us; it’s on our shoulders to do a good job,” he finished.

Despite Kojima’s unlikely return, Okamura revealed that he and “all the original development staff are, of course, credited for their original roles.” “They were already included in the Master Collection, and they’ll be listed in [Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater] as well,” the producer added. Now, even though a reconciliation with Konami and its prodigal son isn’t happening in the short term, this opens the door for a possible future collaboration. However, only time will tell if Kojima himself is open to a homecoming.
