Speaking during an interview with LevelUp, Microsoft's Phil Spencer revealed that he's 'very excited' for what the company has in store for its next Xbox gaming console.

'The reason I love the consoles that we build is because I think we can build very special consoles,' he commented. 'I see it today with Xbox One X and how games run on the Xbox One X; I think it's a fantastic place to play. When I look at our future plans, I am very excited about what we are going to do in the console space.'

Big Phil also briefly touched base on the topic of an Xbox-branded mobile device, saying that this is 'not a focus right now,' though did reveal that Microsoft's R&D section is always 'incubating ideas' for new hardware.

Player choice is also important for Microsoft, said Spencer, as well as the ability to stay constantly connected to their friends.

'The thing I've always thought was a miss was we have so much content that's locked to an individual device,' he said. 'If I play a console on a television, I play these games. If I play on PC I play those games. I play on a phone I play those games. Some of that's great; because some of those games are purpose-built for that scenario. There are great stories and characters that should .. I think gaming brings people together. And I think the content that I love and the stories; I'd love to see it come to every device.'

Microsoft confirmed at E3 that it is working on a new Xbox console, which is supposedly codenamed Scarlett. It later emerged that the format holder is releasing two versions of the system.
