Following an outpouring of player complaints due to the highly unpopular mastery camo update, the XDefiant dev team acted quickly to remedy the situation. Although the level requirements for weapon mastery skins remain the same, Ubisoft has made the grind much easier since you’ll be able to unlock attachments “much faster.” In addition, they’ve also teased the arrival of the XDefiant ranked mode, which will be arriving soon.

That’s according to Mark Rubin, executive producer for XDefiant, who recently posted the lengthy announcement on Twitter/X. In it, he also revealed that since “weapon mastery was the only grind [the game] had, [they] feared that players would achieve the end of that grind too fast, and that would make the skins feel less special and rewarding.” Rubin then admitted that “this was a mistake on [their] part,” which is why they’ve decided to revert it and make it “even better than before.”

Now, since the XDefiant Season 1 release date is still over a week away, the dev team’s decision to prolong the mastery camo grind is slightly understandable. After all, the game is still pretty barebones, and players won’t have anything to do once they finish collecting the Bronze, Silver, and Gold skins for every weapon. And even though the Team Deathmatch release date has already kicked off, one new mode likely won’t be enough incentive to keep players in the game.

Fortunately, Ranked mode is being introduced in XDefiant as part of the first season, so it should at least give uber-competitive players something to grind out for the foreseeable future. Plus, Rubin noted that they’re “working on and have new ways for players to grind out cool rewards coming in multiple future updates.” Although he didn’t specify what these new goodies will be, it’s safe to assume that plenty of fun new content will be arriving soon (possibly even the Search and Destroy mode everyone has been asking for).
