It isn’t uncommon for games to have many features scrapped during development, often due to time constraints. But with the advancement in technology that now allows for updates through the internet, these features can be added at a later date after the game has shipped. Helldivers 2 is no exception and saw planned mechanics removed to be able to ship the game on its planned date. One mechanic that was removed was to add unique HUD features depending on the helmet being used, and it is something many players want to see added to the game.

Arrowhead Game Studios founder Johan Pilestedt revealed in May what the original plan for helmets would be. Like armor, each helmet would have its own stats and perks, allowing for a greater level of customization and changing up the game’s visual aspect.

“Originally, each helmet was going to have a unique HUD – so medics would be able to see health, recon would get enemy outlines, etc. But we unfortunately had to cut it due to… Well, having to ship the game.”

This would have been an interesting feature and it would have been great for when teams are playing together to have different classes and players that are focused on a specific mechanic, such as having a healer or a scout. As it stands right now, all helmets have the same stats and state that they grant “No additional bonuses,” meaning that they are just for cosmetic purposes.

Although it was scrapped due to time constraints, now that Pilestedt has switched his role to Chief Content Officer and is focusing on the development of the game, hopefully, this is something that he looks to implement in a future Helldivers 2 update.

U/XSainth would also like to see the developers create an in-game logbook of enemies to help with strategies saying, “Just add something like an in-game glossary or logbook of enemies. Like, “shoot here, here’s no armor”, ” This one shoot rocket swarm, stay in cover, attack on reload”. Damn, I’m a bot player since the start (two months now), I still have no idea how to kill bile except “shoot head(?)” with quasar and pray that it works.”

Since Helldivers 2 has now shipped and there are no longer time constraints except for ensuring Warbonds are released and the story progresses, it would be great to see these planned features retroactively added to the game. But for now, we have to make do with the mechanics that are in the game and utilize them to become the most efficient Helldiver possible.
