In 2019, Obsidian Entertainment and Sega pulled their action espionage RPG Alpha Protocol from Steam allegedly due to the expiry of its music rights. Then, recently, in March 2024, GOG made it publicly available again with all its original features and a few new ones, including achievements and full controller support, to boot. This time, Valve has surprisingly brought back the game on its Steam platform as part of its Summer Sale.

Despite its welcome return, however, some fans on Reddit pointed out that the current Steam version lacks the new features and slight reworks that GOG offers. Without these updates, you may encounter a few glitches and issues present with the original game. But since Steam only recently relisted it, the update may arrive later to give you all the goodies you need to enjoy it even more. If you want to know what the entirety of GOG’s changes are, here’s the list:

  • Achievements support
  • Full controller support (Dualsense, DualShock 4, Nintendo Switch Pro, Xbox Series, or Xbox One controller)
  • Localization support
  • Cloud saves support
  • Licensed soundtrack
  • Compatibility with modern operating systems

Since Alpha Protocol is part of the annual Steam discount event, you can grab it now with a 20% discount, bringing its price down from $19.99 to $15.99. But like most other games included with the Summer Sale, it’ll only be available until July 11, so you need to act quickly. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay full price for a classic albeit glitch-filled game that may (or may not) get an update.
