Capcom and GOG unexpectedly dropped a PC port of the original 1996 Resident Evil game with the other two entries in the trilogy set to release by the end of the year. Unfortunately, it has been revealed that the upcoming Resident Evil 2 port is based on the Windows 98 version of the game, widely considered to be the worst PC port.

YouTuber TheSphereHunter said in a video that she had the opportunity to play the first two entries in the trilogy before the release on GOG. “This is the original PC release and not the SourceNext version from 2006,” she said. The SourceNext version is considered to be the best version of the game and is the version used by speedrunners.

The later SourceNext version of Resident Evil 2 has features such as auto-aim and higher-quality graphics and FMVs. In this GOG version “you can play the original mode that doesn’t have auto-aim and also the arrange mode that does have auto-aim and altered item locations,” while Suzi also noted that “the FMVs are higher frame rate than RE1s but the resolution is lower than that of the SourceNext version.”

For casual players, this won’t really matter as it is closer to the original PS1 version that most people played back in the late 90s, with Suzi saying that “it still looks great and is consistent with the more accurate pixelated gameplay.” But, it does include multiple extras that aren’t present in the console version and were exclusive to PC including an art gallery, cutscene player, and 3D model viewer. Like the console versions, it also includes the Extreme Battle mode as well as the 4th and Tofu Survivor modes.
