Flour is a crafting material in Manor Lords, which is primarily used for the production of bread.

How to get flour

There are four steps you will need to take to produce flour.

  • Build a farm and farmhouse
  • Plant either wheat or rye, so you can produce grain
  • Set the farm's threshing priority to high
  • Build a windmill to convert your grain to flour

Build a farm and farmhouse

The most important part of this stage is where you choose to build your farm and farmhouse. Make sure to check the land you are considering for high emmer or rye fertility. This will drastically improve the production of wheat or rye, ultimately leading to more grain and more flour.

Note that rye tends to be better in lower-fertility soils.

Plant and harvest

Click on your chosen field, select wheat or rye as its crop, and then assign some families to the farmhouse. The more families you assign, the faster they will be able to harvest!

Set the threshing priority to high

Once the threshing priority is set to high, your farmers will prioritize the producer grain from your wheat or rye. This is good if you want to accelerate grain production, instead of building up stocks of the chosen crop.

Build a windmill

For 4 timber, you can build a windmill. This will allow you to convert grain into flour. For more efficiency, you will want to put the windmill in an open space, but near enough to the farm.

Import flour

If you want to import flour, you will need to build a trading post. This is a good way to combat low fertility land or to increase the amount of bread feeding your settlers - granted you have the regional wealth.

Import grain for your windmill

Again, if your lands are not producing enough grain for the flour itself, you can simply import it. This will ensure your windmill has a steady supply of grain to make flour.

How to use flour

There are two ways to use flour - building regional wealth and producing bread.

Using flour for bread

To produce bread you will need to construct either a communal oven or Bakery Extension in your settlement. You will then be able to convert flour to bread. Having a varied and plentiful supply of food to your settlement is important, especially when it comes to upgrading your burgage plots and improving your settlement.

Exporting flour

If your settlers are permanently in food comas after demolishing loaf after loaf of artisanal bread, you can always start exporting the excess to other territories. Price will vary depending on supply and demand, but it will be a good way of increasing regional wealth.
